“ Cuando en septiembre de 2001 gané el puesto en la Filarmónica de Berlín, como primera mujer en la sección de metales , se hizo para mi un sueño realidad”.
Sarah Willis es inglesa pero nació en Maryland ( USA) . Su profesor de escuela le había dicho que la trompa es un instrumento para hombres y le sugirió estudiar oboe o flauta … , justamente este consejo llevó a Sarah ( que pasó su infancia en Tokio , Boston , Inglaterra y Moscú ) a intentarlo y con 14 años comenzó el estudio de la trompa.
Después de estudiar 3 años en la Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London continuó sus studios en Berlin con Fergus Mc William .
De 1991 a 2001 fue miembro de la Orquesta de la opera de Berlín ( Staatskapelle Berlin). Durante este período tocó reiteradas veces como músico invitado en otras orquestas como: Chicago Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
También actuó como solista en Inglaterra, Alemania y Asia.
Sarah Willis es también miembro de diversos grupos de cámara como “ Divertimento Berlin”, el grupo de metales de la Filarmónica de Berlín y el grupo de trompas de la Filarmónica de Berlin.
Pedagogicamente está activa en un programa educativo que de la orquesta llamado “Zunkunft@BPhil “. En su tiempo libre le gusta bailar salsa…

»Als ich im September 2001 als Hornistin und somit als erste Blechbläserin zu den Berliner Philharmonikern kam, ging für mich ein Traum in Erfüllung!«
Horn sei etwas für Jungs, meinte ihr Schullehrer und schlug Sarah Willis vor, Flöte oder Oboe zu lernen. Doch gerade durch diese Bemerkung fühlte sich die in den USA geborene Britin, die in Tokio, Boston, Moskau und England aufgewachsen ist, herausgefordert und nahm im Alter von 14 Jahren ersten Hornunterricht.
Nach ihrem dreijährigen Studium an der Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, vervollkommnete sie ihre Ausbildung bei Fergus McWilliam in Berlin. Von 1991 bis 2001 war sie Mitglied der Staatskapelle Berlin. Darüber hinaus spielte sie als Gast auch in anderen führenden Orchestern, z.B. im Chicago Symphony Orchestra, im London Symphony Orchestra und im Royal Philharmonic Orchestra und ist solistisch in England, Deutschland und Asien aufgetreten.
Sarah Willis musiziert außerdem in diversen Kammermusik-Ensembles, u.a. im Divertimento Berlin und im Blechbläserensemble der Berliner Philharmoniker. Sie engagiert sich im Education-Programm und tanzt in ihrer Freizeit gerne Salsa.

The horn player Sarah Willis is British, although she was born in Maryland, USA. She lived with her family in Tokyo, Boston and Moscow before moving to England where she began studying the horn aged 14. Her music teacher had suggested she take up the flute or clarinet because “horn was for boys!” but this made her decide to take up the horn.
She studied horn and piano on the Performer´s Course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London for three years with Tony Halstead, Hugh Seenan and Jeff Bryant and then with Fergus McWilliam in Berlin.
From 1991-2001 she held the position of 2nd horn in the Orchestra of the Berlin State Opera under Daniel Barenboim. In 2001 she became the first female to be accepted in the brass section of the Berlin Philharmonic. She is also a member of various chamber music ensembles, including Divertimento Berlin and the Berlin Philharmonic Brass Ensemble.
She has played with many leading orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic and has performed as a soloist in London, Berlin, Italy, Taiwan and Japan.
Sarah Willis enjoys working with children as part of the orchestra´s Education Programme “Zukunft@BerlinPhil” and in her spare time loves to dance salsa and chase after her two lively parrots.
