Berlin Philharmonic hornist FERGUS McWILLIAM<\/strong> was born in 1952 on the shores of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. After hearing his first orchestra concert at the Edinburgh Festival as a very young boy, he decided on the spot that he wanted to become a hornist.\u00a0After his family subsequently emigrated to Canada, he sold newspapers in order to acquire his first instrument and lessons. He graduated from the University of Toronto as a student of Eugene Rittich after initial studies with John Simonelli,\u00a0Frederick Rizner and Barbara Bloomer. He made his first solo appearance at the age of 15 with the Toronto Symphony in 1967 under Seiji Ozawa. McWilliam freelanced in London, England in 1971 and toured Canada extensively between 1972 and 1975 with the\u00a0Classical Brass\u00a0quintet. He also played with the\u00a0National Ballet of Canada Orchestra\u00a0and the\u00a0New Chamber Orchestra of Canada.<\/p>\n

In 1975 he was appointed to\u00a0Orchestra London\u00a0where he played under Karl Richter and continued to appear with several other Canadian orchestras and chamber music ensembles.\u00a0He taught horn and chamber music at a number of music schools, notably, the University of Western Ontario, while pursuing further studies in Amsterdam with Adriaan van Woudenberg of the\u00a0Concertgebouw Orchestra\u00a0and with Wilhelm Lanzky-Otto in Stockholm.<\/p>\n

In 1979 McWilliam became a member of the\u00a0Detroit Symphony Orchestra\u00a0under Antal Dorati. He joined the music faculty of the University of Windsor and was a founding member of the\u00a0Renaissance Wind\u00a0and\u00a0Premier Brass\u00a0quintets.<\/p>\n

In 1982 he left for Germany and an appointment to Munich\u2019s\u00a0Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra\u00a0led by Raphael Kubelik and Sir Colin Davis, and continued to expand his solo and chamber music activities with the\u00a0Munich Wind Soloists, the Bach-Kollegium Munich,and\u00a0Consortium Classicum.\u00a0He also performed with\u00a0the\u00a0Munich Philharmonic,\u00a0the\u00a0Bavarian State Opera\u00a0and the\u00a0Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, McWilliam was appointed in 1985 to the\u00a0Berlin Philharmonic<\/a>\u00a0under Herbert von Karajan. In addition to the orchestra\u2019s two most recent Musical Directors, Claudio Abbado and Sir Simon Rattle, he has also performed with Leonard Bernstein, Carlos Kleiber, G\u00fcnter Wand, Carlo Maria Giulini, Bernard Haitink, Eugen Jochum, Klaus Tennstedt, Sergiu Celibidache, Seiji Ozawa, Riccardo Muti, Pierre Boulez, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, James Levine and Daniel Barenboim. Other historical figures with whom he performed, collaborated, or by whom he was personally influenced, were for example Aaron Copland,\u00a0Gy\u00f6rgy Ligeti,\u00a0Leopold Stokowski, Mstislav Rostropovich and Glenn Gould.<\/p>\n

In 1988 he became a founding member of the\u00a0Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet<\/a>.\u00a0After twenty-seven years touring the world and having made over a dozen CD recordings, this ensemble enjoys nearly reference status.<\/p>\n

McWilliam also founded\u00a0The Horns of the Berlin Philharmonic\u00a0and has helped re-establish\u00a0The Winds of the Berlin Philharmonic. His solo and chamber music activities continue to take him throughout Europe, the Americas and the Far East.<\/p>\n

McWilliam also teaches students from around the world and he has given master classes at numerous \u00a0leading music schools in many different countries. Not only has he taught at both the\u00a0Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Academy\u00a0and the\u00a0Hanns-Eisler-Musikhochschule\u00a0in Berlin; he has also been a visiting lecturer at, for example, the\u00a0Royal Academy of Music\u00a0and\u00a0Guildhall School\u00a0in London, the\u00a0Paris Conservatoire,\u00a0the Tokyo\u00a0University of Fine Arts\u00a0and the\u00a0Royal Conservatoire of Scotland\u00a0in Glasgow. For nearly a decade he taught within Venezuela\u2019s famous youth music programme\u00a0El Sistema,\u00a0and has since become a board member of\u00a0Sistema Scotland. A significant number of his students have gone on to join major world orchestras, including Sarah Willis, who is now his own Berlin Philharmonic horn colleague.<\/p>\n
